1. Salt to Get Rid of Gingivitis

Salt is the common ingredient that is found in every individual house. Though it is mostly used as a cooking ingredient for taste can also be helpful for treating gingivitis. The excellent anti-bacterial properties of salt is very soothy to the mucous membrane thereby reducing the swelling of gums.

Here we discussed only 2 Combinations i.e. one is salt-water and the other is salt-mustard oil-water. Both the salt solutions work well to cure gingivitis problem.

Method-1 (salt and water)

Ingredients

  • Salt- 1 tbsp
  • Lukewarm water- 200 ml or 1 glass

Procedure

  • Take a glass of lukewarm water and 1 tbsp of salt.
  • Now add salt to a glass of water.
  • Stir well and wash your mouth with this solution.
  • Repeat this process 2-3 times a day especially after your meals.

Method-2 (salt, mustard oil and water)

Ingredients

  • Salt- (1/2) tbsp
  • Mustard oil- 2-3 drops
  • Warm water- 1 cup

Procedure

  • Take (1/2) tbsp of salt and add 2 or 3 drops of mustard oil to it forming a thick paste.
  • Rub your mouth gum gently with this mixture for 2 minutes.
  • Now wash your mouth with warm water to get rid of this paste and repeat the process 2-3 times a day.

2. Baking Soda to Cure Gingivitis

Baking soda or bicarbonate of soda has the amazing quality of  balancing pH levels i.e. acidic or alkaline nature. It is an inexpensive remedy for many common ailments. Use of baking soda as an essential ingredient makes impossible for the harmful bacteria and other microbes to survive in your mouth.

Here we shared more information about how baking soda with its wonderful combinations like peroxide and apple cider vinegar can treat gingivitis problem.

Method-1 (baking soda and water)

Ingredients

  • Baking soda-(1/2) tbsp
  • Warm water- 2-3 drops

Procedure

  • Mix ½ tbsp of baking soda with 2-3 drops of warm water to make a thick paste.
  • Now brush your teeth with this baking soda paste for 2 minutes.
  • Wash your mouth with warm water and repeat the process once in every 2-3 days.
  • This solution will make your teeth look white and free from harmful infections.

Method-2 (baking soda, salt and water)

Ingredients

  • Baking soda- 1tbsp
  • Salt- 1tbsp
  • Warm water- 1 cup

 Procedure

  • The procedure is same as that of Method-1, but here we mix a tablespoon of baking soda and salt together.
  • Wash your mouth with this solution (combination of salt and baking soda).
  • Do this once in a day regularly in the early morning.

Method-3 (baking soda and peroxide)

Ingredients

  • Baking soda -2 tbsp
  • Hydrogen peroxide (diluted)-2 drops

Procedure

  • The procedure is as simple as others. Firstly, take 2 tbsp of baking soda.
  • Add 2 drops of diluted hydrogen peroxide to the baking powder.
  • Stir the mixture thoroughly and apply it on to the gums prone to gingivitis.
  • Rinse well and then clean with water to remove unwanted food or dust particles.

Method-4 (baking soda and apple cider vinegar)

Ingredients

  • Baking soda- 2tbsp
  • Apple cider vinegar- 2-3 drops
  • Warm water- 1 cup

Procedure

  • Mix 2 tbsp of baking soda and 2-3 drops of apple cider vinegar.
  • Now add a cup of warm water to the mixture to make a dilute solution.
  • Clean your mouth with this solution and spit it out.
  • Repeat the process twice a day.
  • If you use directly without adding warm water to the mixture it results in soar throat and burns etc.,.

3. Tea Tree Oil for Gingivitis

Antibacterial and anti-septic properties of tea tree oil make a perfect remedy for all types of infections including the mouth. For this you just need to dilute tea tree oil by mixing with your regular tooth paste and rub it on affected gum areas. Though it’s quite crazy combination works well for your gingivitis problem..

Ingredients

  • Organic tooth paste
  • Tea tree oil- 2drops

Procedure

  • Add 2 drops of tea tree oil to the amount of toothpaste you regularly use to brush your teeth.
  • Now brush your teeth with as you do regularly.
  • Do not swallow as the tea tree oil is highly toxic when consumed.

4. Lemon Juice for Gingivitis

Lemon juice is an effective method in treating gum infections for many people. It is mainly due to the high vitamin C content, citric acid, ascorbic acid and ammonium salts of lemon juice makes an anti-inflammatory agent.

Ingredients

  • Lemon-1
  • Warm water-1 glass

Procedure

  • To make use of lemon juice for gingivitis, slice the lemon into 2 equal halves and squeeze out the juice into a glass of warm water.
  • Mix well and drink this lemon juice after brushing your teeth in the early morning.
  • If you don’t like the acidity of the lemon, then use half lemon added in a glass of water.
  • The lemon juice mixed with warm water not only cleans your teeth but also detoxifies your body.

5. Oil Pulling to Treat Gingivitis

Oil pulling or oil swishing is a traditional remedy in India to treat mouth related problems. It involves the pulling of teeth using 1 tbsp of oil in the oral cavity such as coconut oil, sunflower oil or sesame oil. It is believed that it kills the harmful micro-organisms or toxins present in the mouth and boosts immune by detoxifying your body.

Method (coconut or sesame oil and water)

Ingredients

  • Coconut or sesame oil- 2 tbsp
  • Warm water- 1 cup

Procedure

  • Put 2 tbsp of coconut or sesame oil inside your mouth.
  • Swish it around your mouth to ensure that every corner of the mouth comes in contact with the oil.
  • At the beginning, start doing it only for 1-2 minutes and slowly increase the oil pulling time.
  • After pulling oil in your mouth, spit out and wash with warm water.
  • Oil pulling is best done in the morning just before you brush your teeth.

6. Turmeric for Gingivitis

Turmeric contains a compound called curcumin, an active component well known for powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. To use turmeric for gingivitis makes it as a fine powder. For better results it is combined with Neem powder, salt and alum powder.

Redness and swelling can be reduced by mixing with alum powder. It also kills the bacteria accumulated in your oral cavity which is responsible for gingivitis problem.

Ingredients

  • Turmeric- 4 tbsp
  • Neem powder-8 tbsp
  • Salt- ¼ tbsp
  • Alum powder- ¼ tbsp

Procedure

  • Mix all the 4 ingredients and store them in an air-tight container.
  • Take some powder, apply it on your teeth, gums and rub gently.
  • Repeat the process 2-3 times a day for quick relief from gingivitis.

7. Guava Leaves for Gingivitis

Guava leaves are loaded with extra ordinary properties like antioxidants, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial that helps to fight against the gingivitis disease. The leaves are very safe to chew and eat in which it contains a compound called guaijaverin.

Instead of chewing the guava leaves directly, it is made into a fine solution as a mouth washer. Here is the simple procedure to make your own guava leaf solution to treat gingivitis problem.

Ingredients

  • Guava leaves- 4/6
  • Water- 2cups

Procedure

  • Pour 2 cups of water in a container and boil it for 5 minutes.
  • Wash guava leaves before you dip in a hot water and simmer it till water remains half of its original quantity.
  • Allow it to cool for sometime and rinse your mouth with this water 2-3 times a day.

8. Sage for Gingivitis

Sage leaves contain the antimicrobial properties that can treat the infections and swelling as well. You can easily prepare a large quantity of this herbal mouth washer and store in a air-tight container or capped bottle.

Ingredients

  • Dried sage herb-1 tbsp
  • Water- 2 cups

Procedure

  • For the sage to treat gingivitis, firstly boil the water in a small container.
  • Add sage leaves to it and simmer it for 5-10 minutes.
  • Take out from the boiler and sip when it is warm.
  • Rinse your mouth with this herbal tea 2-3 times a day.

In case, if you don’t find sage leaves then you can go with mint leaves. The procedure and curing capacity is same as that of sage leaves.

9. Aloe Vera for Gingivitis

Due to anti-inflammatory and healing properties of aloe vera, it is widely used as miracle medicinal herb to treat gingivitis problem. Like other juices aloe vera need not to be diluted and make sure the juice is 100% pure.

Ingredients

  • (1/2) cup of aloe vera gel extracted from the leaf

Procedure

  • Take out fresh aloe vera gel from the leaf by making a cut over sideways.
  • Apply the aloe vera gel twice a day to the gingivitis affected gum areas.
  • After applying the aloe vera gel you may or may not wash with water.
  • Store the left over aloe vera gel in an air tight container.

10. Clove Oil for Gingivitis

Clove oil is used as remedy for treating oral infections like tooth ache and swollen gums over the years. eugenol, the most active component in clove leaves has anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that helps to cure gingivitis easily.

Ingredients

  • Clove oil- few drops
  • Cotton swab

Procedure

  • Pour few drops of clove oil onto the cotton swab.
  • Press the cotton swab soaked in clove oil against the affected gum areas for 2-3 minutes.
  • This will act as instant pain relief to your mouth problem and cure gingivitis.

Precautions

  • Stop smoking and drinking alcohol with high phosphorus content.
  • Consult a dentist regularly to keep your mouth free from infections and diseases.
  • Rinse your mouth with anti-septic mouth washer regularly, recommended by dentist.
  • You can use homemade mouthwash day and night until you get relief from the pain.
  • Brush your teeth daily, if possible twice a day in right way by focusing on your gums.
  • Avoid eating too much of sweets, pizzas, burgers, chocolates and other sources of sugar foods.
  • Drink water frequently throughout the day to rinse your teeth and to prevent from building plaque.
  • Do not apply baking soda directly on your teeth. Multiple applications of baking soda can damage the tooth enamel.

How to Get Rid of Brown Spots on Skin

Brown spots are mainly caused due to the over exposure of skin to the sun’s harmful UV rays. This prolonged exposure will increase the production of melanocytes that in turn raises melanin in the skin which turns the skin darker.

These painless dark patches on the skin are also termed as dark spots, sun spots, age spots and liver spots. They appear most commonly on the face, neck, chest, shoulders, back and hands.

Other than sun exposure, aging, genetics, stress, nutritional deficiencies, weak liver functioning, pregnancy, certain health problems, etc. can also result in these dark spots.

Although, these spots are harmless, they make you look unattractive and feel embarrassed. Instead of using cosmetic products or treatments for preventing brown spots, you can try some natural ways to get rid of the dark spots.

Home Remedies for Dark Spots:

There are many best natural remedies available at home that effectively fades away these dark spots without any side effects.

Method – 1: (Lemon Juice)

Lemon juice exhibits exfoliating and bleaching properties that help to prevent brown spots by exfoliating the skin and reveal a fresh new layer of the skin. It not only lightens the spots but also makes it soft, clear and glowing.

  • Mix enough fresh lemon juice and sugar to make it a paste.
  • Apply it on the dark spots and scrub it gently for few minutes.
  • Rinse off after 5 – 10 minutes and continue doing this scrubbing process for few times a week.

Note:

  • Or add some olive oil into this mix before scrubbing.
  • Also, apply fresh lemon juice (or) rub a lemon piece (or) a combination of lemon juice with turmeric powder (or) lemon juice with tomatoes directly on the dark spots to get rid of the problem.
  • If you’ve sensitive or dry skin, dilute the fresh lemon juice with rose water or aloe vera gel or honey or water and apply it on your brown spots.

Method – 2: (Apple Cider Vinegar)

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) has alpha hydroxy acids (AHA) that exfoliate the skin. It balances the pH levels of the skin and thus fades away the spots or scars without drying the skin.

  • Mix 1/2 teaspoon of organic ACV in 2 – 4 tablespoons of fresh orange juice.
  • Stir well and apply it on the brown spots using a cotton ball.
  • Let it dry for few minutes and rinse off with water.
  • Do the same process once daily till you fade away the dark spots completely on the skin.

Note:

  • Or dilute equal quantities of ACV and water and mix it by adding some honey. Apply it on the spots and rinse off after few minutes.
  • Or else apply ACV directly on the dark spots affected areas (might sting) to get rid of the problem.
  • Also, grate a 4 –inch piece of horseradish (skin lightening agent) and mix it in 1/4 cup of ACV. Stir well and keep it aside for 2 weeks and then stir. Strain the mix and apply it on the dark spots using a cotton ball. Rinse off after few minutes and repeat 2 – 3 times daily.

Method – 3: (Buttermilk)

Buttermilk has lactic acid which exfoliates the skin to remove age spots and blemishes. It lightens the skin without drying it.

  • Mix 2 teaspoons of tomato juice in 4 teaspoons of buttermilk.
  • Apply it on the brown spots affected skin areas and massage gently.
  • Let it sit for few minutes and rinse off with water.
  • Repeat it for 1 – 2 times daily till you get relief from the dark spots.

Note: Also, apply buttermilk directly on the affected areas using a cotton ball (or) drink buttermilk daily (or) applying a combination of lemon juice mixed buttermilk will help to get relief from the problem.

Method – 4: (Castor Oil)

Castor oil has monounsaturated fatty acids that promote antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties to protect the skin. It moisturizes, soothes the skin and fades away the dark spots on the skin.

  • Apply castor oil directly on the brown spots using a cotton ball.
  • Massage gently for few minutes to overnight and rinse off with water.
  • Continue doing the same process for once in the morning and once at night before bedtime to get rid of brown spots and also to make the skin tone even.

Note: Also, use almond oil, coconut oil, olive oil or vitamin E oil along with castor oil to get rid of these spots.

Method – 5: (Sandalwood and Rosewater)

Sandalwood has an excellent skin lightening property that reduces the hyperpigmentation to fade away brown spots on the skin. Rosewater soothes the skin and prevents sun spots.

  • Mix 2 teaspoons of rose water and 1 teaspoon each of fresh lemon juice and glycerin in 2 tablespoons of sandalwood powder.
  • Stir well to make a fine paste and apply it on the spots affected areas as a pack.
  • Let it sit for few minutes to dry completely and rinse off with cold water.
  • Continue the same for few times a week till your brown spots disappear.

Note: Or mix few drops of sandalwood oil in 1 tablespoon of olive oil (or almond oil) and apply it on the dark spots affected areas in every night before bedtime and rinse off in the morning.

Method – 6: (Chickpea or Gram Flour)

Chickpea flour lightens the skin by fading off the scars and spots. It suits for all skin types that leaves the skin fresh and smooth.

  • Squeeze lemon juice freshly from 1/2 a lemon and dip this empty lemon in a bowl filled with rosewater.
  • Then add 2 teaspoons of gram flour, 1 teaspoon each of milk (or curd) and tomato juice, lemon juice and 2 pinches of turmeric in another bowl.
  • Stir well to make a paste and apply it on the dark spots affected areas and let it sit for 20 minutes till it dries off.
  • Then pour few drops of castor (or almond) oil on your fingers and start scrubbing gently your skin to take off the paste.
  • After that, take the lemon slice dipped in rosewater and rub it all over the affected area.
  • Rinse off the skin after the paste comes off completely.
  • Repeat the same process once daily for 10 days and then do it for twice a week till you get complete relief from the dark spots.

Tips and Precautions:

  1. Apply a paste prepared by grinding horseradish piece with some water on the affected areas and rinse off after 15 – 20 minutes. Do this for few times a week to get rid of dark spots.
  2. Aloe vera soothes the sunburnt skin and aids skin regeneration to get rid of dark or sun spots. Apply fresh aloe vera gel (or juice) on the sun spots for twice daily to fade away the spots.
  3. Enzymes (papain) and alpha hydroxy acids in papaya will exfoliate the skin and thus reduces age spots. Rub some grated papaya on the brown spots and rinse off with lukewarm water after 20 minutes. Or rub papaya peel on the spot affected area but check whether you’re allergic to papaya before applying it.
  4. Also, apply watermelon juice, garlic paste, plain yogurt, onion juice, cucumber juice, tomato juice, fresh pineapple juice, etc. on the dark spots to get rid of the problem.
  5. Red currants have antioxidants and essential nutrients that prevent brown spots. Mash 1/4 cup of unripe red currants with 1 tablespoon of honey and apply this paste on the dark spots. Rinse off with warm water after 30 minutes. Apply lemon juice mixed with water on the area to treat the spots.
  6. Drink plenty of water and consume a healthy diet to get rid of any skin problems from inside out.
  7. Follow some skin care regimen like wear sunscreen while going out in the sun, remove makeup while applying the natural remedies, rinse your face at night before bedtime, moisturize it, etc. to prevent dark or age spots.

DIY Natural Toothpaste Recipes

Our day starts with brushing the teeth, but have you wonder whether your toothpaste isn’t good for your health? The commercial toothpastes have many harmful chemicals and toxins like triclosan, sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), fluoride, etc. that not only damage your teeth but also your overall health in the longer run.

Ingredients in commercial toothpaste and their effects on the teeth:

  • Triclosan acts as an endocrine disruptor that changes hormone regulation.
  • Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), a foaming agent and a carcinogen that irritates your gum and contributes to gum inflammations along with causing cancer sores.
  • Fluoride will affect your pineal gland, bones and also distract your brain functioning.
  • Glycerin is mainly used to give paste – like consistency and it tends to coat the teeth which in turn prevents remineralization process (the mechanism of body’s natural cavity fighting).
  • Titanium dioxide used to make your toothpaste white in color and it is absorbed by oral tissues and might cause some oral damage.
  • Artificial coloring affect ADHD and hyperactivity in children and the highly abrasive ingredients in the toothpaste will damage the tooth enamel and thus results in teeth sensitivity, cavities, and gum recessions.

Yes, we can and here are some DIY recipes for natural toothpaste, which is easy to make, cost effective, simple ingredients and extremely beneficial for oral health.

Homemade Toothpaste Recipes:

Discover these amazing natural toothpaste recipes that protect your teeth and makes it whiter and stronger. Let’s get started.

Recipe – 1: (Coconut Oil with Baking Soda, Turmeric and Peppermint Extract)

Coconut oil has rich content of lauric acid that exhibits antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties used to remove plaque and tartar on the teeth along with preventing bad breath, toothache and other gum diseases. Baking soda has an abrasive property that whitens your teeth and neutralizes the acids in your mouth to reduce bad breath and plaque.

Turmeric exhibits anti-plaque, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties that keep the dental problems away and helps maintain overall oral health along with whitening the teeth. Peppermint extract prevents cavities and bad breath.

  • Add 2 tablespoons each of organic virgin coconut oil and baking soda, 10 – 15 drops of peppermint extract and 1/2 – 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder in a bowl.
  • Stir well with a non-metallic spatula or spoon till it forms a smooth paste.
  • Store this toothpaste in an airtight container and refrigerate it.
  • Spread this paste on the toothbrush and brush your teeth for 2 – 3 minutes but don’t expect to get foam for this toothpaste.
  • Finally, rinse off the mouth thoroughly with lukewarm water.
  • Use it regularly but if you find toothpaste dries then add some coconut oil and mix well before using.

Note:

  • You can also add mineral clays like bentonite clay and stevia to this homemade toothpaste.
  • Also, mix 2/3 cup of baking soda, 1 teaspoon of fine sea salt, filtered water and 1 – 2 teaspoons of peppermint extract. Stir it well and use it as your homemade toothpaste.
  • Or mix 6 tablespoons each of coconut oil and baking soda, 1 teaspoon of stevia and 25 drops of essential oil. Pour it in a mason jar and use it as your daily toothpaste.
  • Or simply mix 4 tablespoons of coconut oil, 2 tablespoons of baking soda, 20 drops each of cinnamon (or clove) essential oil and peppermint oil, 1 tablespoon of xylitol powder and 30 drops of trace minerals. Store it in a glass jar with a lid and use it regularly as your toothpaste.

Recipe – 2: (Bentonite Clay with Calcium Powder and Baking Soda)

Bentonite clay is rich in minerals and alkaline in nature that reduces acidity in your mouth along with absorbing toxins, impurities, and heavy metals. Xylitol has the ability to reduce cavity-causing bacteria and it is also used as a sweetener. Baking soda neutralizes the acid and encourages good bacteria along with protecting the tooth enamel.

Essential oils fight against the plaque and gum problems. Calcium powder provides good minerals that strengthen and whiten your teeth. Trace minerals provide extra minerals to the paste.

  • Add 5 tablespoons of calcium powder, 4 tablespoons of coconut oil, 1 tablespoon of baking soda, 3 tablespoons of xylitol powder, 30 drops of essential oils, 20 – 30 drops of trace minerals and 3 tablespoons of distilled water.
  • Stir well to make a smooth paste and then add 2 tablespoons of bentonite clay slowly till it mixed well.
  • Place this toothpaste in an airtight container and use it as your regular toothpaste.

Note:

  • Also, prepare a remineralizing toothpaste by mixing 5 parts of calcium powder, 2 parts of baking soda, 1 part of a diatomaceous earth (DE) and 2 parts of xylitol powder in a bowl and then add 3 – 4 parts of coconut oil and few drops of essential oils in it. Stir well and use it as your toothpaste.
  • Or mix 4 tablespoons each of coconut oil and bentonite clay, 1/2 teaspoon of real sea salt, 10 – 15 drops of peppermint essential oil and 2 – 3 tablespoons of filtered water to make a paste. Use it as your toothpaste.

Recipe – 3: (Remineralizing Tooth Powder)

Bentonite clay (draws out toxins and impurities), baking soda (alkaline and removes stains), cloves powder and cinnamon powder (acts as antibacterial and taste great), calcium powder (strengthens the teeth) and mint (soothes the gum) are required to prepare this remineralizing tooth powder.

  • Add 4 tablespoons of bentonite clay, 3 tablespoons of calcium powder, 2 tablespoons of powdered mint leaf, 1 tablespoon each of baking soda and cinnamon powder and 1 teaspoon of cloves powder in a bowl.
  • Stir well by adding few drops of essential oils and 1 teaspoon of xylitol powder.
  • Store this in a glass jar with a lid and use it as your regular tooth powder to cleanse your teeth.

Tips and Precautions:

  1. For best results, brush your teeth for twice daily to remove plaque and cavities and to enhance your oral health.
  2. Always use organic products for preparing the natural toothpaste. Also, reduce the xylitol powder and stevia in your toothpaste.
