Bruise (or contusion) is a black, purple red or bluish mark on the skin that caused due to an injury which brushes the small blood vessels and leak blood into the adjacent tissues, under the skin’s surface.

However, the effect of these bruises will depend on the skin’s sensitivity and may take 12 days to months to get heal completely, depending on the severity. The color gets more intense when the broken blood capillaries are close to the skin’s surface.

Injury, fragile skin, accident, over exercising, banging or bumping against something, poor diet (lack of vitamins C & K), bleeding disorders, anemia, obesity, certain medications, etc. will cause these hideous marks. Pain or swelling in the affected area along with the skin discoloration will be experienced as symptoms.

Instead of using OTC medications or creams, just try some simple natural remedies to get rid of bruises and its symptoms.

Home Remedies for Bruises:

Here are the best and widely used natural remedies that help you to speed up the healing process and clear these bruises effectively.

Remedy – 1: (Cold (or ice) Compress and Hot Compress)

Ice or cold compress is an effective way to reduce swelling and pain, as it compress the blood vessels and thus prevent it from further seepage of blood into the tissues and skin.

  • Simply wrap some ice cubes in a small cloth and hold it over the bruise affected skin area for 10 – 15 minutes.
  • For best results, do it immediately as a first aid after getting this mark on the skin.
  • Continue doing the same process for several times in that day (24 hours).
  • Also, replace ice with a bag of frozen vegetables as a cold compress (if ice is not available).
  • Alternatively, you can also soak a clean cloth in ice or cold water (add few drops of lavender oil) and squeeze it to apply on the affected area to get a soothing effect.
  • Never ever apply ice directly on the skin why because it results in frostbite.

After 48 hours, when the initial swelling is gone, then you can apply moist heat to help stimulate the blood flow and to restore the mobility to the affected.

  • Soak a clean washcloth in warm water and wring it to remove excess water.
  • Place it on the affected area for few minutes till the cloth cool down completely.
  • Repeat it few times daily till you get complete relief from the problem.
  • Also, you can apply a heating pad on the affected area to improve blood circulation and thereby to get rid of these marks on the skin.
  • Alternatively, you can prepare an herbal tea compress by placing 1 teaspoon each of dried lavender flowers and chamomile flowers in 1 cup of hot water. Cover and steep it for 10 – 15 minutes. Strain the mix and refrigerate it. Soak a cloth in this cold herbal tea and use it as your cold compress. Continue it for few times in a day (24 hours).

Remedy – 2: (Arnica)

Arnica is an herbal remedy used to reduce the pain, swelling, and inflammation on the affected area. It enhances the blood circulation all around the bruise affected area.

  • Mix 1 tablespoon each of witch hazel bark, arnica tincture, chamomile flowers, and St. John’s wort in a bowl.
  • Then add 4 drops of lavender oil and 2 tablespoons of cold water in it.
  • Stir well and soak a clean washcloth in this mix for few minutes.
  • Squeeze the cloth to remove excess liquid and place it on the bruise affected area.
  • Wait for 15 – 20 minutes and repeat it once or twice daily in the first couple of days to get rid of pain and the skin discoloration.

Note:

  • Or take arnica gel or tincture (add a small amount of water to tincture) and use it rub on the affected areas for few times daily.
  • Avoid applying arnica on the broken skin, as it causes irritation.

Remedy – 3: (Bromelain)

Bromelain (protein digesting enzymes) is present mostly in pineapples. It exhibits an anti-inflammatory property that helps to heal bruises on the skin. It also treats bone bruises along with fading the marks on the skin.

  • Take 250 – 400 mg of bromelain supplements for thrice daily till the bruise clears on the skin.
  • Or simply consume fresh pineapple and other bromelain-rich fruits to clear the bruise marks on the skin.
  • Regular intake will help you to get rid of the problem.

Remedy – 4: (Essential Oils)

Essential oils will help you to get rid of a bruise by increasing the blood circulation and thereby disperse the pooled blood to reduce the marks on the skin. But be sure to apply the essential oils (or its blend) after a couple of days.

  • Mix 1 drop of cypress oil, 2 drops of fennel oil and 5 drops of calendula oil in 4 teaspoons (10 ml) of grapeseed oil.
  • Stir well and apply it on the bruise affected areas.
  • Rub it gently for few minutes on the affected area and continue doing it once daily till you get relief from the problem.

Remedy – 5: (Diet Plan)

  • Vitamin K regulates blood clotting and reduces bruising. So, include vitamin K-rich foods like spinach, kale, lettuce, alfalfa, broccoli and other green leafy vegetables. Also, consult your doctor before taking vitamin K (or alfalfa tablets), as it may interact with certain medications.
  • Vitamin C rich foods like oranges, mangoes, broccoli, sweet potatoes, peppers, etc. will help to reduce the inflammation and bruises sooner. So, consume vitamin C rich foods regularly to clear bruises.
  • Drink plenty of water and other healthy diets to keep yourself hydrated and to heal these bruise marks on the skin.
  • Consume protein-rich diet and quit smoking or drinking alcohol for getting quick relief from the problem.

Other Effective Remedies:

  • Comfrey is an age old remedy that used for treating bruises and wounds. So, prepare comfrey tea by steeping 1 tablespoon of dried comfrey herb in 1 ¼ cups of hot water for 15 – 20 minutes. Soak a clean cloth in it and place it on the affected area as a cold compress for 1 – 2 days and then as a warm compress.
  • St. John’s wort contains anti-inflammatory properties that treat bruises and also acts as an analgesic to give relief from pain. Steep 2 tablespoons of dried St. John’s wort in 1 cup of hot water for about 10 – 20 minutes and drink it once daily (or) apply St. John’s wort oil for several times daily to clear the problem.
  • Vinegar helps to increase the blood flow near the skin’s surface on the affected area which in turn dissipates the blood to pool into the bruised area. Soak a cloth in apple cider vinegar mixed with some water and place it on the affected area as a compress for 10 minutes. Never apply it on the broken areas, as it causes irritation and pain.

Tips and Precautions:

  1. Rub vitamin K cream gently on the affected area for twice daily till you get complete relief from the problem.
  2. Applying some ingredients like fresh lemon juice, onion juice, melted warm chocolates, hot sugar or honey syrup and butter and wrap it with a bandage to get quick heal from the problem.
  3. Massaging the affected area with castor oil, coconut oil, margarine, aloe vera gel, etc. will increase proper blood circulation and thereby relieves you from the bruises.
  4. Elevate the bruise affected area so that it prevents the blood from pooling in the bruised area and thus reduces the discoloration.
  5. Always you should try to treat the bruise in legs and hands from the top but not under the affected area. Also, restrict moving often, as walking, running, moving or jumping will worsen the bruise. So, avoid placing any strain on the affected area.
  6. Avoid taking aspirin, due to its blood thinner effect but you can take acetaminophen or ibuprofen or any other painkiller for relief, after consulting your doctor.
  7. Take enough rest and enjoy your favorite TV shows or movies or sleep or any of your favorite activity to enhance the healing of bruises completely.
  8. Remember that bruises are not any indication of a serious health problem. So, consult your doctor if you’re suffering from any significant bumps, high fever, extreme pressure around the bruise, reduction of blood and oxygen supply to that area, then go to the doctor for proper diagnose and treatment.
  9. Ultraviolet light (Sunrays) will help to break down the bilirubin, which in turn break down the hemoglobin causing the yellowish color to the bruise. So, try to get 10 – 15 minutes of direct sunlight per day to break up the bruise without leading to sunburn.
  10. Apply some crushed parsley leaves and spread it all around the bruise to reduce the pain, inflammation and to heal the bruise quickly. Make sure to wrap the area with an elastic bandage.
  11. Mix 1/2 tablespoon of salt in 1 tablespoon of lard and apply it on the bruise to prevent it from getting darker on the skin.

Home Remedies for Nail Fungus

Nail fungus is a fungal infection generally forming beneath the nail, more commonly on the toe nails. It should be treated immediately otherwise it will spread to other parts of the body or lead to loss of the nail.

Symptoms include:

  • Inflammation
  • Swelling

  • Thickening or crumbling of nail
  • Dull with no luster or shine
  • Yellow nail colour.

Main causes for nail fungus is low immunity system, continuous exposure to moist environment, mold or yeast, poor hygiene, diabetes, etc.

Home Remedies for Nail Fungus:

These natural home remedies can help to cure fungal nail problems in no time!

1. Tea Tree Oil:

Tea tree oil contains antiseptic and fungicide properties.

Method: (Tea Tree Oil Soak)
  • Pour few drops of tea oil onto a cotton ball and apply to the nail fungus.
  • Rub it on the affected nail for about 10 minutes.
  • Use a toothbrush to scrub it gently on the affected nail.
  • Diluting the oil by mixing with equal amounts of olive oil or thyme oil.
  • Alternatively you can pour 4 – 5 drops of tea oil in bowl large bowl of water and place your affected nail in the water.
  • Repeat the process 2 times a day
Method – 2: (Tea Tree Oil with Orange Oil and Grape Seed Oil)
  • Take a teaspoon of tea tree oil and 1/2 teaspoon each of orange oil and grapeseed or olive oil.
  • Mix it well and allow a cotton ball to soak in it a few minutes.
  • Press gently onto the affected nail.
  • Allow the liquid to dry naturally on your nail and repeat the process daily.
Method – 3: (Tea Tree Oil with Olive Oil)
  • Combine a small amount of olive oil and tea tree oil.
  • Stir it well and use this to rub on the infected nail.
  • Leave it on for few minutes and then wash it off with water.
  • Pat it dry and reapply it regularly for few days.

2. Baking Soda:

Baking soda has fungistatic and alkaline properties that help to prevent the fungus from growing or spreading.

Method – 1: (Baking Soda with Hydrogen Peroxide, Epsom Salt and Water)
  • Take 1/2 cup of baking soda, 1/4 cup of peroxide, 1/2 cup of Epsom salt and 4 cups of water
  • Mix all these ingredients properly and add 1/4 cup of white vinegar.
  • Soak the affected nail in vinegar for few minutes.
  • Dip a cotton ball in the baking soda solution.
  • Tape the cotton ball on the nail.
  • Continue doing the process every 10 hours up to 4 weeks.
Method – 2: (Baking Soda)
  • Wash your hands with soap and warm water and pat dry.
  • Mix 2 parts baking soda with one part of water to form a paste.
  • Apply this paste on the entire nail using a cotton swab and allow it to sit for 10 – 15 minutes.
  • Rinse the paste and pat your nail dry.
  • Repeat the process 2 times a day.
Method – 3: (Baking Soda with Vinegar)
  • Mix a cup of vinegar with water.
  • Soak the affected fingers in it for about 15 minutes.
  • Dry your nails.
  • Mix several tablespoons of baking soda with water.
  • Soak your fingers in the baking soda solution for about 15 minutes.
  • Repeat the process twice a day.

3. Coconut Oil:

Coconut oil contains medium chain fatty acids that work as natural fungicides that insert themselves in the lipid layer, ultimately leading to the destruction of fungus.

Method:
  • Apply a small amount of coconut oil to the affected nail thoroughly by massaging it gently
  • Allow it absorb and dry naturally.
  • Make sure that you have to wash your hands in between applications.
  • Repeat the process 2 – 3 times daily until you get complete relief from the nail fungus.

4. Orange Oil:

Pure orange oil has antifungal properties that cure your nail fungus.

Note: Do a patch test first to avoid irritation.

Method – 1: (Orange Oil)
  • Fill a dropper with orange oil.
  • Apply it in between the infected nail, on and under it.
  • Rub it gently and leave it to dry naturally.
  • Repeat the same process twice a day.
Method – 2: (Orange Oil with Carrier Oil)
  • Take equal quantities of orange oil and any carrier oil like grapeseed oil.
  • Mix it well and apply this on the affected nail.
  • Allow it to dry and repeat regularly.

5. White Vinegar:

Vinegar kills the fungal actions on your nail without any side effects. It also balances your pH levels to get rid of the fungus problem.

Method:
  • Mix 1 part vinegar with 2 parts of warm water.
  • Soak your affected nail for about 10 – 15 minutes.
  • Repeat every alternative day.

6. Garlic:

Garlic contains allicin, an antifungal property which helps to treat the nail fungus effectively.

Method:
  • Mix equal quantities of garlic oil and white vinegar.
  • Apply this mixture on and around the infected nail and cover it with an elastic bandage.
  • Alternatively, use 2/3 crushed garlic cloves mixed with 2 tablespoons of olive oil.
  • Allow it to soak for few minutes and then apply it on the affected part.
  • Or even eating a clove of garlic every day will help.

7. Apple Cider Vinegar:

Apple cider vinegar has mild acidic nature which helps to prevent nail fungus from spreading.

Method – 1: (Diluted Apple Cider Vinegar)
  • Take equal parts of apple cider vinegar and water and mix well.
  • Soak the infected nail for about 30 minutes.
  • Dry the infected nail thoroughly
  • Follow this process daily for at least 4 weeks.
Method – 2: (Apple Cider Vinegar with Rice Flour)
  • Mix coarsely ground rice flour with few teaspoons of apple cider vinegar and mix.
  • Apply this on the affected nail.
  • Scrub the area gently to remove the dead skin cells.
  • Regularly repeat the process.

8. Listerine Mouth Wash:

Listerine mouthwash kills the bacteria and germs not only in your mouth but also in the infected nail due to its antiseptic properties.

Method:
  • Fill a small tub with Listerine mouth wash.
  • Add vinegar and undiluted lemon juice.
  • Stir it well and soak your fungus affected nail in it for about 10 – 15 minutes.
  • Then scrub the infected nail gently and dry it completely.
  • Repeat daily until the old affected nail grows out.

9. Lavender Oil:

Lavender oil contains several volatile compounds and antiseptic properties that help to fight the infection.

Method:
  • Mix equal quantities of lavender oil and tea tree oil and warm slightly.
  • Dip a cotton ball in the solution.
  • Dab this solution on the affected nail and surrounding areas at night.
  • Cover it with a cotton ball sealed with a gauze overnight.
  • Repeat the process for 3 – 5 days.

10. Lemon Juice:

Lemon juice has both antifungal and antiseptic properties to treat the nail fungus effectively. It also contains citric acid that helps to stop the fungus from spreading

Method – 1: (Lemon Juice)
  • Apply freshly squeezed lemon juice directly on the infected nail.
  • Let it sit for 10 – 14 minutes and then rinse it off with warm water.
  • Pat it dry and repeat it daily for at least a month.
Method – 2: (Lemon Juice with Olive Oil)
  • Mix equal parts of fresh lemon juice and olive oil.
  • Massage into the infected nail and its surroundings.
  • Repeat regularly.

Tips to Reduce the Nail Fungus:

  • Or if you don’t have aloe vera juice or gel then simply use coconut oil and honey only for treating acne.
  • Alternatively, mix enough of coconut oil in 2 tablespoons of green mud powder along with some honey and apply it as a pack on the face. Rinse with warm water after it gets dried to prevent acne.
  • Or simply mix 1 teaspoon of baking soda with 1 tablespoon of coconut oil to make a paste. Apply it on the face and neck. Rub it gently and rinse it off with cold water after few minutes.

Method – 3: (Coconut Oil Moisturizer with Lemon)

Lemon has rich amounts of vitamin C that strengthen the immune system and this process is used to neutralize the pH level of the body and works effectively as a moisturizer to prevent redness, irritation, dry skin and acne blemishes without further damage to the skin.

Steps to be followed…

  • Add fresh lemon juice extracted from 1 lemon, few drops of essential oil (or vitamin E oil) and vanilla extract in 4 tablespoons of melted organic coconut oil.
  • Stir well to make a fluffy texture and apply it to the acne affected areas.
  • Massage gently and leave it on for few hours to overnight.
  • Refrigerate the remaining mix for further usage.
  • Regular application will yield best results of curing acne quickly.

Method – 4: (Coconut Oil Scrub for Acne)

This scrub exfoliates the skin to clear dead cells and excess oil and makes it free from acne. It also moisturizes the skin to prevent dryness and other discomforts caused by acne.

Steps to be followed…

  • Add 1/4 cup each of coconut oil and olive oil (or sesame oil) and 1 teaspoon of nectar in 1/2 cup of sugar.
  • Stir well and apply it on the cleansed face and neck.
  • Scrub it gently for few minutes and rinse off with warm water.
  • Dry the skin and continue doing the same regularly till you cleared acne on the face.

Note: Or mix 1 tablespoon of oatmeal and 3 tablespoons of virgin coconut oil in some warm water. Apply it on the face, neck, and back by focusing more on the acne affected skin areas. Rub it gently for few minutes and rinse it off after 15 – 20 minutes with water.

Method – 5: (Coconut Oil with Banana)

Banana has various enzymes that hydrate the body and heals acne blemishes without forming scars. This process is used to prevent dry skin by moisturizing the skin along with disinfecting the area to prevent the bacterial effect.

Steps to be followed…

  • Take 1/2 a piece of ripe banana and mash it thoroughly.
  • Add 1 tablespoon of coconut oil and a pinch of turmeric powder to it.
  • Stir well and apply it on the pimples.
  • Wait for 20 – 30 minutes and rinse off with warm water followed by cold water.
  • Repeat it regularly to make yourself free from acne blemishes or pimples.

Note: Alternatively, use certain combinations like coconut oil with turmeric powder or Kaolin powder (fine white clay) or egg white or yogurt or tomato and jojoba oil for treating your acne.

Tips and Warnings:

  1. Use organic, cold pressed and virgin coconut oil for clearing acne, pimples and blackheads along with acne scars. The best time to apply coconut oil is at night before bed time and also steam your face before application.
  2. Coconut oil might cause some allergic reaction. So, it’s advised to do some skin patch test before applying it on the acne.
  3. Wash the acne affected areas and your hands thoroughly before applying coconut oil for acne to prevent the spread of bacteria to other parts.
  4. Coconut oil acts as a cleanser when mixed with any light carrier oil which makes the oil to absorb deep and easy into the skin and thereby debris the clogged skin pores to clean the skin.
  5. Make an appointment with your doctor if you didn’t find any relief from acne or its symptoms after using coconut oil for treating acne.

Natural Hair Masks for Healthy and Beautiful Hair:

Here are some best hair masks that help you a lot in treating almost every hair problem. You can choose the mask as per your hair problem and try it to get a healthy hair growth.

Mask – 1: (Papaya Mask for Healthy Hair Growth)

The combination of papaya with coconut milk and honey will hydrate the hair and supports the growth of healthy hair.

Ripe papaya is enriched with vitamins A & C, magnesium, beta-carotene, magnesium, potassium, copper, etc. that support your hair growth by removing the buildup of oil and impurities on the scalp. Coconut milk has high-fat content that penetrates deep into the hair. Honey acts as a natural emollient that works for smooth and soft hair.

  • Place 1/2 cup of peeled ripe papaya, 1/4 cup of coconut milk and 1 teaspoon of raw honey in a blender.

  • Blend it till you get a smooth paste and then add 1 tablespoon of honey and few drops of rosemary essential oil (optional, as rosemary enhance hair growth) in it.
  • Stir well and apply this hydrating hair mask on all over your hair and cover it with a shower cap.
  • Wait for 30 – 45 minutes and rinse off with water and mild shampoo.

Note:

  • Or wash a handful of fresh hibiscus leaves and remove their stalk. Grind them to make a paste and take it out into a bowl. Now grind 1 – 2 tablespoons of soaked fenugreek seeds to make it as a paste. Mix these two pastes and apply it on the hair as a mask and rinse off after 30 minutes.
  • Also, you can apply only hibiscus leaves and flowers and apply it as a mask.
  • Or mix few drops of lemon juice to the mask for treating dandruff and itchy scalp.

Hibiscus Mask for Silky and Shiny Hair

Mask – 3: (Gelatin Mask for Strong Hair)

Gelatin is a collagen protein that derived from cartilage, bones, and skin of animals. It makes your hair healthy and strong which in turn prevents hair fall.

  • Mix 1 tablespoon of gelatin in 1/2 cup of warm milk or warm water.
  • Stir well to make a paste and then add 2 tablespoons of olive oil (or coconut oil), 1 egg (both white & yolk), 2 tablespoons of hair conditioner (avoid if you have oily hair) and few drops of ACV or essential oils in it.
  • Stir well and apply this mix as a mask on your wet hair thoroughly.
  • Cover the hair using a shower cap and then towel.
  • Leave it for 30 – 40 minutes and rinse off with shampoo and water.
  • Continue applying this hair mask for once a week to strengthen the hair follicles and to enhance stronger and softer hair growth.

Gelatin Mask for Strong Hair

Mask – 4: (Avocado and Honey Mask for Dry and Dull Hair)

To treat your dry and dull hair, you can go through this mask. This mask will provide an excellent moisturizing to the hair and thus makes it look well nourished.

Avocado has unsaturated oils and enriched with nutrient dense that provides essential moisture to the hair. Honey acts as a natural humectant that attracts and retain the moisture to prevent it from dryness.

  • Take a medium sized ripe avocado and mash it to make a fine paste.
  • Then add 2 tablespoons of honey and stir well.
  • Apply this paste on your dry or slightly damp hair and let it sit for 15 – 20 minutes by wrapping your hair in a shower cap.
  • Rinse off with water followed with a mild shampoo and repeat this moisturizing mask for once a week.

Avocado and Honey Mask for Dry and Dull Hair

Note:

  • Or pour 1/2 sliced avocado, 1/4 cup of mayonnaise, 2 tablespoons of coconut oil and 1 tablespoon of raw honey in a blender. Blend it to make a paste and apply it throughout the damp hair. Cover it with a shower cap and rinse off with water after 30 minutes to moisturize to your natural hair.
  • Also, mix mash of 1/2 a ripe avocado and 2 egg yolks and apply it on the dry hair. Leave it for 15 – 20 minutes and rinse off with water.

Mask – 5: (Egg Yolk with Coconut Oil Mask for Damaged hair)

Coconut oil has essential fatty acids and vitamin E content that makes the oil to penetrate deep into the scalp and maintain its elasticity along with nourishing the hair. Egg yolk has all essential nutrients and proteins that help the hair to withstand the damage caused by hair styling products.

  • Pour 1 egg yolk, 2 tablespoons of virgin coconut oil and honey in a blender.
  • Blend it to make a paste and apply it on your damp hair as a mask.
