Our scalp has sebaceous glands which produce the essential oil to maintain the scalp well moisturized but due to certain factors like scalp infection, frequent shampooing, excessive usage of hair styling products, poor and unhealthy diet, stress, hormonal changes, dehydration, underlying health issues (like eczema, psoriasis, dandruff), dry and cool weather, etc. will affect the oil production and thereby results in dry scalp.

Dry scalp causes itching, flaking and frizzy hair and if not treated on time, then it results in weakening the hair follicles by drying the scalp and thus results in hair fall.

Home Remedies for Dry Scalp:

Here are the best remedies explained that effectively treats your problem at home without any side effects. You need to choose the best and follow them regularly till you get complete relief from the problem.

Remedy – 1: (Coconut Oil)

Coconut oil treats hair and scalp problems effectively. It stimulates the sebaceous glands to produce essential oil, supplies essential nutrients, enhances the blood circulation to hair follicles and scalp and also locks the moisture content to prevent dryness on the scalp.

  • Slightly warm some coconut oil and apply it all over the scalp and hair.
  • Massage it gently for few minutes till the oil saturates completely into the scalp.
  • Let it sit for at least 2 hours to overnight and then shampoo your hair to get rid of dry scalp.
  • Continue doing the same process for 2 – 3 times a week till you get complete relief from the problem.

Note: Or you can use any other oils like almond oil, castor oil, olive oil, sesame seed oil, mustard oil or jojoba oil instead of coconut oil.

Remedy – 2: (Tea Tree Oil)

Tea tree oil has antibacterial, antifungal and antiseptic properties that treat the fungal infections and other microbes causing dry scalp. It has an anti-inflammatory property that soothes the scalp and relieves you from the dryness, itching, and flaking.

  • Mix 5 – 7 drops of tea tree oil into the shampoo and stir well.
  • Use it to shampoo your hair and scalp.
  • Rinse the hair thoroughly with lukewarm water.
  • Repeat it regularly till you get complete relief from dry scalp.

Note:

  • Or simply use tea tree oil based shampoo for treating this dry scalp problem.
  • Also, you can mix tea tree oil in conditioner (or) mix 5 – 7 drops of tea tree oil in enough water and use it to rinse the hair after shampooing.
  • Combine 2 – 3 drops each of neem oil, lavender oil and rosemary oil and 4 – 5 drops of tea tree oil in 1 teaspoon of carrier oil. Massage this oil mix on the scalp and hair and let it sit for overnight. Rinse off with a mild shampoo and do it regularly for twice a week.

Remedy – 3: (Apple Cider Vinegar)

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) has natural antibacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties that clear the germs causing scalp infections. It also neutralizes the pH of the scalp to prevent over drying on the scalp. It reduces the itching, flaking sensation on the scalp and moisturizes it to treat dryness.

  • Mix 1/2 cup each of raw, organic ACV and water in a bowl.
  • Apply this mix on the scalp and massage it gently for few minutes.
  • Let it sit for about 10 minutes and rinse your hair with shampoo and lukewarm water.
  • Repeat it regularly till you relieved from dry scalp.

Note: Or mix a handful of rosemary in 3 cups of boiling water. Cover and simmer for 45 minutes. Strain and let it cool. Mix 1/2 cup of ACV and 10 drops each of peppermint and rosemary oil in that water. Stir well and pour it in an empty spray bottle. Use it to spray on your hair after washing it.

Remedy – 4: (Lemon)

Lemon has antibacterial, antimicrobial and antiseptic properties that treat germs causing infections on the scalp. It exfoliates the scalp to remove dead cells and other dirt that clogs the hair follicles. It also moisturizes the scalp to prevent dryness.

  • Mix 1 teaspoon of raw honey in 1 tablespoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice.
  • Stir well and apply this mix on the scalp.
  • Massage it gently for few minutes and rinse off with shampoo and warm water.
  • Regular follow – up of this process will help to get rid of dry scalp.

Note:

  • Or mix few drops of fresh lemon juice in 1 cup of warm coconut oil and apply it on the scalp. Wrap your hair in warm towel and wait for at least an hour. Take out the towel and rinse the hair.
  • Or mix equal quantities of fresh lemon juice and organic coconut oil in 1 cup of fuller’s earth to make a paste. Apply this paste on the scalp and wash your hair with shampoo after 3 – 4 hours.
  • Also, mix 2 tablespoons of lemon juice in 3 tablespoons of yogurt and apply it on the scalp. rinse off with a mild shampoo after 10 – 15 minutes.

Remedy – 5: (Egg Yolk and Olive Oil)

Egg yolk has essential proteins and deep conditioning properties that nourish the hair and prevent dryness. Olive oil helps to moisturize the hair follicles and treat the problem effectively.

  • Add 2 – 3 egg yolks, few drops of water and 2 teaspoons of olive oil.
  • Stir well and apply this mix on your damp hair and scalp.
  • Leave it on for about 15 – 20 minutes and rinse off the hair with lukewarm water.
  • Dry your hair and do it regularly for 1 – 2 times a week.

Note: Or add few drops of essential oil in this mix to prevent the egg smell and don’t apply conditioner to the hair after this egg mask.

Remedy – 6: (Aloe Vera)

Aloe vera has an excellent cleansing, soothing and moisturizing properties that help to treat dry scalp.

  • Extract fresh aloe vera gel from an aloe leaf and blend the gel.
  • Then add few drops of essential oil into it and stir well.
  • Apply it on the scalp and hair and wash it off with water after 20 – 30 minutes.
  • Continue this process regularly till you get complete relief from this problem.

Note:

  • Also, use aloe vera based shampoo and conditioner (or) rub the rind of aloe vera on the scalp to get rid of dry scalp.
  • Avoid using aloe vera for dry scalp if you’re prone to cold, as the cooling spreads to the entire body.

Remedy – 7: (Avocado)

Avocado is rich in minerals, vitamins and other natural oils that help a lot in preventing dry scalp. Regular application will make your hair soft, shiny and well moisturized.

  • Mash 1 ripe avocado and add 2 tablespoons of olive oil and 1 teaspoon of honey in it.
  • Stir well and apply it on your dry hair and scalp.
  • Cover it with a shower cap and wait for 30 – 45 minutes to rinse off with mild shampoo and water.
  • Do the same process regularly till you’re dry scalp problem is cleared completely.

Tips and Precautions:

  1. Use a beer shampoo to add moisture and shine to your dry and dull hair. Also, apply other natural remedies like mayonnaise, honey with olive oil, Listerine with baby oil, baking soda paste (baking soda with water), onion juice with olive oil, Epsom salt with coconut oil, mashed banana, etc. on the scalp and hair for treating dry scalp.
  2. Avoid over styling or over drying your hair, as it clears moisturize and oil on the scalp and makes it look dry and frizzy.
  3. Drink plenty of water and include a healthy diet (rich in omega – 3 fatty acids, vitamins B, C & E zinc or iron) to get rid of this dryness on the scalp.
  4. Avoid the intake of caffeine, alcohol, sugar and sugary beverages. Also reduce the intake of vitamin A, as it worsens this problem.
  5. Always check out the ingredients in any oil or shampoos or hair care products before buying and make sure they are free from sulphates and paraben (SLS).
  6. Apply oil to your hair regularly to maintain a proper balance of oil and moisture on your scalp and also to improve blood circulation to prevent dryness on the scalp.
  7. Consult your doctor if you’re even experiencing dryness on the scalp for proper diagnose and treatment.
  8. Avoid over exposure to direct sunlight or harsh climatic conditions, as they cause excessive dryness.

According to Indian Ayurveda, fenugreek is an excellent remedy for treating many hair problems like gray hair, hair fall, hair loss, dandruff, scalp infections, etc. and thus makes your hair grow strong and shiny.

Here are some fenugreek benefits for healthy hair growth. Let’s have a look at its properties and use it to get healthy hair.

How Does Fenugreek Oil help for Healthy Hair Growth:

  • Fenugreek has a hormone called antecedents which help to stimulate the hair growth and strengthens the hair follicles.

  • Mix 3 tablespoons of dried fenugreek seeds and 175 – 200 ml of coconut oil in a small jar.
  • Then fill a large jar with water and place this seeds infused oil jar inside the large jar.
  • Now heat the large jar on the stove for few minutes.
  • But be sure that coconut oil should not boil and it has to be thoroughly heated.
  • Remove the small jar and put it in a place where there is direct sunlight for a week.
  • After that, strain the oil and pour it into a small jar to use it regularly.
  • For usage: Apply some fenugreek oil on the scalp and hair. Massage gently for few minutes and rinse off with water after an hour to get rid of hair problems.
  • Continue the same process regularly for best results.

Method – 2: (Fenugreek Seeds with Black Onion Seeds and Coconut Oil)

Fenugreek seeds promote new hair growth and reduce hair fall by providing essential proteins and nutrients required for the hair. Black onion seeds have proteins, vitamins, folic acid, iron, zinc, copper and other beneficial acids along with antimicrobial properties that prevent split ends and keep the hair healthy. Coconut oil moisturizes the scalp to clear scalp issues.

  • Coarsely grind 1 tablespoon each of fenugreek seeds and black onion seeds separately.
  • Then pour this grind fenugreek and black onion seeds in a glass bottle.
  • Fill the bottle with 100 ml of coconut oil and boil water in a pan.
  • Place this bottle stove to the stove for about 15 minutes and take out.
  • Now keep this oil bottle in direct sunlight for 15 days and use it
  • For the application, slightly dampen your hair with warm water and apply this oil on the hair. Massage gently from roots to tips and rinse off with shampoo and conditioner after 2 – 3 hours.
  • You can re-fill the bottle by adding coconut oil to it, as it won’t disturb the nutritional content of the oil.
  • Repeat this process regularly to promote healthy hair growth.

Method – 3: (Fenugreek Seeds with Aloe Vera Leaf and Vetiver Root)

Here we make the oil using sprouting fenugreek seeds in aloe vera gel. This oil is used to treat hair fall and premature graying, as it strengthens the hair roots and adds natural color to your hair.

  • Take a fresh leaf of aloe vera and cut it into two and sprinkle 2 tablespoons of fenugreek seeds in between the leaf.
  • Tie the aloe leaf with a thread loosely, as it ensures the fenugreek seeds is in content with aloe vera gel.
  • Leave it for about 48 hours to make the seeds becomes sprouted.
  • Then take out the seeds into a plate and dry it under the sun till it becomes crisp.
  • Now place a small bunch of vetiver root, dried sprouted fenugreek seeds in a bowl filled with 1 cup of coconut oil.
  • Cover the top of the bottle with a thin mesh and put in under direct sunlight for 2 – 3 days.
  • Strain the oil without changing its color into a glass bottle.
  • Use it regularly to get rid of the hair fall or premature gray hair by strengthening the hair roots.

Fenugreek Homemade Oil Hair Fall

Method – 4: (Fenugreek Seeds with Olive Oil)

Olive oil has an antioxidant and antimicrobial property that conditions your hair and repairs it from chemical damages. It also moisturizes the hair to keep it free from dry, itchy or flaky hair.

  • Pour 1 1/4 cup of extra virgin olive oil and 1/2 cup of fenugreek seeds in a large mason jar.
  • Close the jar tightly with its lid and set the jar in a saucepan which is filled with water.
  • Turn on the heat to medium low and let it sit for 10 minutes and take out the jar.
  • Leave the jar undisturbed for 24 hours and reheat the jar and let it sit for another 24 hours.
  • After that, strain the oil into a large mason jar and add 1/2 cup of fenugreek seeds in it.
  • Again heat the jar twice and let sit for 24 hours and strain the oil.
  • Store the oil in a cool, dry and dark area and use it regularly to get rid of the hair problems.

Note: Or simply grind 4 tablespoons of fenugreek seeds into powder and mix with in 1/2 cup of warm olive oil. store the oil in a glass container for 2 weeks and filter the oil to use it daily.

Method – 5: (Fenugreek Seeds with Olive oil, Castor Oil and Almond Oil)

Castor oil has antimicrobial properties and has rich content of vitamin E, minerals, omega fatty acids, proteins, etc. which are essential for maintaining healthy hair. almond oil has rich content of vitamin E and other essential nutrients that enhance the hair growth and prevents split ends by moisturizing the hair.

  • Place 1/2 – 3/4 cup of fenugreek seeds in a saucepan to remove the impurities for few minutes.
  • Then pour this toasted fenugreek seeds in a jar and add 1 teaspoon of MSM, 1 tablespoon of moringa, 3/4 cup of olive oil, 10 drops of peppermint oil and 5 tablespoons each of castor oil and sweet almond oil in it.
  • Stir well and keep the jar in a warm place for a week.
  • Now use this oil to get rid of hair problems. for application, apply it on the scalp and massage gently for few minutes and rinse off after 3 – 5 hours.
  • Repeat the process regularly for 3 – 4 times a week for best results.

Do’s and Don’ts:

  1. Prepare any form of fenugreek oil in your home and use it regularly to get relief from the hair problems and to promote healthy hair growth.
  2. Avoid the usage of chemical based shampoos and over-styling your hair, as they damage your hair and result in hair fall.

  • Stir well and apply this mix on the scalp and leave it for about an hour or two.
  • After that, rinse off your hair with a shampoo and warm water.
  • Continue the same process for once a week on regular basis.

Note: You can replace coconut oil with any natural carrier oil like olive oil, almond oil, castor oil or coconut milk.

  • Mix 1/2 cup each of warm olive oil and aloe vera gel along with 4 – 6 drops each of sandalwood oil and rosemary oil.

  2. Fuller’s earth has a mild cleansing property that prevents frizzy hair without damaging it. Mix 1 egg white, a little water and 2 tablespoons of rice flour in 1 cup of fuller’s earth to make a paste. Apply it on the hair and comb it. Rinse off after an hour and spray milk on hair. Wash off after 15 minutes.
  3. Apple cider vinegar (ACV) has natural pH levels and promotes hair straightening. Mix 1 – 2 tablespoons of ACV in 1 cup of water and use it as a final rinse after shampooing your hair.
  4. Beer has proteins and vitamins along with it acts as a cleansing and shine agent that softens your hair. Boil 1 cup of beer in a pan till it reduces to half and then mix this cooled beer with 1 cup of regular shampoo. Rinse your hair with this shampoo to grab smooth and straight hair.

  6. Also, mix 2 tablespoons each of plain yogurt, olive oil, and honey to 2 ripe bananas to make it a paste. Apply it on your hair and cover it with a shower cap. Rinse off after 30 minutes.

DIY Natural Homemade Hair Oil

Everyone desires to have a healthy hair with flake – free scalp. Long, shiny and lustrous hair not only enhances the beauty of a girl but also indicates their overall health.

But due to pollution, nutritional deficiencies, improper hair care, stress and other environmental irritants, we are experiencing many hair problems like dandruff, hair fall, head lice, dry and itchy scalp, frizzy hair, etc.

For a healthy hair growth, we need a good shampoo to deep cleanse the hair, oil to nourish and conditioner to make it smooth and shiny.

Although, there are many shampoos, oils, creams, conditioners and other hair care products available in the cosmetic world, the only drawback is that the chemicals in it, which may harm your hair in the longer run.

Do you know that regular application of hair oil will nourish your hair and scalp for proper hair growth? yes, the oil will repair the dry and damaged scalp, smoothens your dull and rough hair, hydrates your hair by locking the moisture and prevents hair loss and gray (or premature gray) hair problems.

Instead of using chemical based hair oils, why don’t we use a natural homemade hair oil prepared with simple ingredients? In this article, we are going to know about natural homemade hair oils for healthy hair growth and to treat many hair or scalp problems.

Homemade Natural Hair Oil for Healthy Hair:

Coconut oil, castor oil, almond oil, mustard oil, etc. are some of the most commonly used hair oils. So, here let’s know how to prepare a natural hair oil using the combination of these oils.

Hair Oil – 1: (Coconut Oil with Castor Oil and Lavender Oil)

Coconut oil has essential fatty acids that penetrate deep into the scalp and nourishes your hair. Castor oil improves blood circulation that prevents scalp problems and helps regrowth your hair. Lavender oil and tea tree oil helps to prevent dry, flaky and itchy scalp along with dandruff.

Vitamin E oil will boost the oxygen supply to the scalp and thus makes the hair stronger and healthier (less prone to breakage).

  • Mix 80 ml of organic coconut oil and 30 ml of castor oil in a bowl.
  • Then add 5 – 6 drops of lavender oil, 5 – 8 drops of tea tree oil and vitamin E oil (from 5 – 6 vitamin E capsules into the bowl.
  • Stir all these ingredients and pour it in a clean hair oil bottle.
  • Dampen your hair and apply the warm oil onto your hair and scalp.
  • Now massage gently to spread the oil evenly and cover your hair with a shower cap.
  • Let the oil sit for a minimum of 30 – 45 minutes to overnight and then wash your hair with a regular shampoo.
  • Repeat this oil application regularly for 2 – 3 times a week to grab the hair growth.

Hair Oil – 2: (Coconut Oil with Curry Leaves, Amla and Mustard Oil)

Coconut oil has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties that nourish your hair and prevent damages and infections on the scalp. Alkanet is a natural conditioner that prevents premature graying, baldness and hair loss. Fenugreek seeds prevent hair loss, premature graying and dandruff.

Amla (or Indian Gooseberry) has rich content of vitamin C that prevents hair breakage, it also removes dandruff and unwanted flakes on the scalp. Curry leaves have essential nutrients that prevent hair damages, treats dandruff, strengthens your hair follicles. Vitamin B in curry leaves will prevent premature graying of hair.

  • Pour 2 cups of coconut oil in a pan and add 1 cup of alkanet herb in it.
  • Boil it for few minutes and then add 15 – 20 amla (deseed pieces) to it.
  • Stir well and add few fenugreek seeds and 1 cup of fresh curry leaves.
  • Boil it for 1 – 1 ½ hours under low flame and strain it to cool down.
  • Store this deep red hair oil in an empty bottle for regular usage.
  • Now add mustard oil (1 part of raw mustard oil to 5 parts of prepared oil) to the oil and shake it well.
  • Apply the oil to your scalp and hair and let it sit for few hours to overnight.
  • Finally, rinse off your hair to get rid of the hair fall and grey hair problems.
  • Continue the application of this oil for 2 – 3 times a week on regular basis.

Hair Oil – 3: (Henna Hair Oil with Coconut Oil and Fenugreek Seeds)

Henna is a natural hair color and conditioner that re-grow your lost hair follicles. Fenugreek seeds have high amounts of proteins, iron, potassium, vitamin C and lecithin that nourish and strengthen your hair follicles and regrow them to prevent hair fall.

  • Mix 2 tablespoons of natural henna powder with 4 tablespoons of organic coconut oil in a bowl to make it a fine paste.
  • Then add 1 cup of coconut oil to it and stir well.
  • Microwave the oil mix bowl for 30 seconds and pour this oil into the glass jar filled with 2 tablespoons of fenugreek seeds.
  • Shake the jar well and apply this henna hair oil onto your scalp and hair.
  • Massage it gently to spread the oil and also to boost proper blood circulation.
  • Let it sit for few hours to overnight and rinse off with a mild shampoo and lukewarm water.
  • Regularly apply this warm henna oil for 2 – 3 times a week to get rid of baldness and gray hair.

Hair Oil – 4: (Carrier Oils with Amla)

Coconut oil has natural antioxidants along with a rich source of vitamins (K & E) and iron that fights against the free radicals damaging your hair and also nourishes your scalp. Olive oil improves the hair’s elasticity to prevent hair breakage.

Sesame oil nourishes your hair to get rid of dry and frizzy hair. Castor oil has an antimicrobial property that helps to protect the scalp. Almond oil nourishes and smoothes the hair follicles to make it thick.

  • Pour 100 ml of organic coconut oil, olive oil, mustard oil, sesame oil, almond oil and castor oil in a pan.
  • Place the pan on the stove over low heat and add 2 handfuls of dried amla and 2 handfuls of curry leaves in it.
  • Stir well and then add small chunks of onions in this oil.
  • Boil it till the onions chunks turn into brownish color and turn off the heat.
  • Let the oil cool for few minutes and strain it.
  • Store the oil in an airtight container and apply this oil for twice a week regularly to get healthy hair growth.

Hair Oil – 5: (Coconut Oil with Curry Leaves, Hibiscus and Henna)

Curry leaves have a rich source of beta keratin, amino acids and antioxidant property that makes your hair grow stronger. Henna is a natural hair conditioner, durva (Bermuda) grass help to absorb the heat from the body. Hibiscus flowers prevent premature gray hair and make your hair root strong.

  • Pour 1 ½ glass of water, 1 bowl of curry leaves, a handful of henna leaves, 7 – 10 hibiscus flowers and few durva (Bermuda) grass in a pan.
  • Boil it till the water level reduced to 1/2 glass and then strain the juice.
  • Now place a pot filled with 1 liter of coconut oil on the stove and pour the juice into it.
  • Stir well and boil it for 30 minutes.
  • let the oil cool for few minutes and store it an empty hair oil bottle.
  • Then take enough oil and warm it slightly to apply it thoroughly on your scalp and hair.
  • Massage it gently for few minutes and rinse off after few hours.
  • Repeat it once or twice a week regularly to reduce hair breakage and to make your hair growth strong and shiny.

Hair Oil – 6: (Curry Leaves Herbal Hair Oil)

This Herbal Hair oil is effective in treating dry scalp, dandruff, baldness, and premature grey hair.

  • Wash 10 sprigs of curry leaves and dry them thoroughly under the sun.
  • After it dries completely then grind them by adding 1 teaspoon of fenugreek seeds till you get a fine powder.
  • Then add 125 ml of coconut oil and 50 ml of castor oil in a pan.
  • Heat it for few minutes and add the curry leaves powder to it.
  • Stir well and heat the ingredients for 3 – 5 minutes and turn off the heat.
  • Cover the pan with its lid and rest it for about 10 hours.
  • Strain the oil into an airtight container and apply this oil on all over the scalp and hair.
  • Regular application of this herbal oil will help to get rid of hair fall and promotes strong hair growth.

Hair Oil – 7: (Onions with Garlic, Olive Oil and Green Tea)

Onion has a rich content of sulfur that helps for the regrowth of hair follicles to prevent hair fall. Olive oil has a deep moisturizing property that promotes healthy scalp and thereby hair growth. Green tea restricts the growth of Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) that hinders hair growth and causes hair fall.

  • Place 1 onion, 5 cloves of garlic, 2 teaspoons of crushed cumin seeds and 1 teaspoon of pounded ginger in a blender and blend it.
  • Put this paste in a jar and add 4 tablespoons each of olive oil and green tea to it.
  • Stir well and apply this oil mix on the hair by massaging gently.
  • Rinse off your hair after 30 – 45 minutes and repeat regularly for best results.

Tips and Precautions:

  1. Also, mix equal quantities of coconut oil, almond oil, and sesame oil in a bottle and shake it well. Apply this oil on the scalp and leave for overnight. Rinse off your hair with shampoo in the next morning.
  2. You can prepare hair oil by adding essential oils like mixing 2 ounces of coconut oil, 1 ounce each of castor oil and apricot kernel oil, 6 drops each of lavender, peppermint, rosemary, clay sage essential oil to it. Stir well and use this herbal oil on regular basis to get rid of baldness or hair fall.
  3. A healthy massage will help to boost up the blood circulation and makes your hair look shiny and smooth.
  4. Other than the application of hair oils, you have to rinse your hair with shampoo, reduce the usage of hair styling products, overheating the hair and other hair care hygiene to enjoy healthy and long hair.
  5. Treat your scalp problems like dryness, dullness, frizzy, dandruff, itching, psoriasis or others quickly to prevent the further damage caused by it.
