Teeth are essential for maintaining overall health that helps us to consume our desired foods and make the body to get all the nutrients, proteins and other healthy things for their proper functioning. So, if your teeth got pain due to many reasons like infection, injury, cavities, exposed tooth root, wisdom tooth, cracked root, gum disease, loose filling, jaw joint disorder, etc. then it causes pain to all other body parts.
The breakdown of tooth enamel will lead to cavities and decay problems which result in irritated and inflamed tooth pulp. It’s always best to consult your dentist before the problem gets worse but in the meantime, follow the below mentioned natural remedies at home to get rid of the pain temporarily.
Home Remedies for Toothache:
Here are the best toothache remedies that you help you in dealing with throbbing tooth pain and its symptoms.
1. Salt Water:
Salt acts as an antibacterial, analgesic, anti-inflammatory and drying agent that cleans the mouth and draw out the fluids which causing pain and swelling.
Steps to be followed…
- Mix 1 tablespoon of salt in 1 glass of warm water.
- Stir well and use it to gargle.
- Make sure to spit out the water after gargling.
- Repeat the same process for 2 – 3 times a day till you get relief from a toothache.
Note: Or salt mixed with pepper is also a great combination used for toothache relief. Mix equal quantities of common salt and black pepper powder with few drops of water to make it a fine paste. Apply it on the affected tooth and rinse your mouth after few minutes.
2. Clove Oil:
Cloves have antibacterial, antioxidant, anesthetic and anti – inflammatory properties that help to alleviate tooth pain and other dental problems.
Steps to be followed…
- Pour 3 – 5 drops of clove oil on a cotton ball.
- Place it against the tooth where you’re getting pain.
- Let it stay for few minutes and take out the cotton ball.
- For more effective results, place it at night before bed time and leave it on for overnight.
- After that, rinse your mouth and repeat the same process regularly till you got relief from tooth pain.
Note:
- Or else, mix few drops of clove oil in 1/2 glass of water and use it as your mouthwash.
- Alternatively, grind 2 whole cloves and add a little of olive oil or vegetable oil in it to make a fine paste. Apply this paste on the affected tooth and leave it for few minutes to few hours.
- Or simply hold a clove against the affected tooth and bite it to extract its juice.
- Also, heat 1 teaspoon of coconut oil and add 3 – 4 cloves in it. Let it cool and grind it to make a fine paste. Apply it on the aching tooth and rinse off after 5 – 7 minutes with water thoroughly afterwards.
3. Garlic:

- Crush a garlic clove with some salt and stir it to make a paste.
- Apply it on the affected tooth to get rid of the pain.

Note: Or simply place 2 – 3 garlic cloves on affected tooth and bite it to extract its juice to prevent the pain.
4. Wheatgrass Juice:

- Blend few fresh wheatgrass by adding a little water in it.

5. Hydrogen peroxide Rinse:

- Add equal parts of 3% hydrogen peroxide and water and stir well.
- Swish this mix into your mouth for about 30 – 45 seconds.

6. Ginger – Cayenne Pepper:
Ginger has antibacterial and pain relieving properties that prevent swelling caused due to a toothache. Capsaicin is a natural pain reliever present in cayenne pepper. So, this method is very effective in relieving toothache and other dental problems.

- Add equal parts of cayenne pepper powder and ginger powder (or grated ginger) in a bowl.
- Mix it well by adding a little of water to make a fine paste.
- Apply it on the affected tooth by using a cotton ball.
- Leave it on for few minutes until the pain fades away or till this concoction burns the tooth skin.
- Repeat it regularly for best and quick relief from toothache.
Note: Or else add some raw, organic apple cider vinegar instead of water in the above process for making cayenne – ginger paste.
7. Tea Tree Oil:
Tea tree oil has antiseptic and anti – inflammatory properties that penetrate deep into the tooth to kill the bacteria causing tooth decay, stops swelling in the gums and calms down the nerves to give relief from dental problems.
Steps to be followed…
- Pour few drops of tea tree oil on a cotton ball and hold it against the affected tooth.
- Leave it on for few minutes and repeat the same regularly.
Note: Or simply add few drops of tea tree oil in 1 glass of warm water and use it to rinse your mouth daily till you get complete relief from the pain.
Tips and Precautions:
- Onions have antimicrobial and antiseptic properties that clear the pain. Chew a raw onion or place it on the affected tooth to get rid of the pain.
- Chewing 2 – 3 tender guava leaves (or raw spinach leaves or peppermint leaves) till the juice comes out will work well for treating toothache.
- Even a vanilla extract will also work well in treating toothache, as it numbs the pain and thus gives calming effect. Dip a cotton ball in vanilla extract and dab it on the affected areas for few times a day.
- Ice alleviates the tooth pain by numbing the nerve endings. Simply wrap small ice cubes in a thin cloth (or cold compress) and place it on the cheek where your tooth is aching for few minutes.
- Regularly have your dental checkups to know all about your teeth and gum conditions. Also, cover the broken tooth (or a tooth with lost filling) with a soft chewing gum to prevent the pain and discomfort.
- In certain cases, acupressure can also help to stop the tooth pain. Just apply some pressure with your thumb on the back of other hand where the base of your thumb and index finger meet for not less than 2 – 3 minutes. This trigger the endorphins release to get rid of the pain.
- Oil pulling will pull out the toxins and other bacteria causing oral problems from your mouth. It’s a best idea to do oil pulling for at least once or twice a month to get rid of these dental problems.
- Avoid sugar, chocolates, citrus fruits, white starches and grains, sugary beverages, etc. which causes tooth decay and thereby toothache.
- Include foods that are rich in calcium, manganese, vitamin C and K, omega – 3 fatty acids, magnesium, raw fruits and vegetables, green tea, plenty of water, soft foods, etc. in your daily diet to get rid of the pain.
- Brush and floss your teeth for twice daily. Rinse your mouth with lukewarm water after eating.
- Avoid smoking, drinking alcohol, stress and get enough of sleep. Also, prevent the intake extremely hot or cold foods which might damage the teeth nerves.
- Be sure to check whether the pain is exactly caused by tooth problems or any other internal respiratory problems by consulting your dentist and then follow the remedies as per your health problems.
- Always use soft bristle toothbrush which helps to preserve your gum tissue and prevents it from further shrinking.

One other way is to swish with coconut oil (if it’s solid, it melts in your mouth). Coconut oil is antibacterial, and somehow has never let me down when I swish for a couple minutes or more with it. The pain has ALWAYS gone away. Of course it probably depends on the cause of the pain, but it’s worth a try! To top it off, I let the goodness of the coconut oil work as well from the inside and fight any infection by taking a teaspoon of it once a day. It’s actually helped digestion as well by doing that. Nothing like letting food be your medicine!

Yes, coconut oil pulling is one great way to get rid of many teeth or health problems like it removes toxins, improves oral health, lessens jaw pain, balances hormones, boosts immunity, etc. But be sure to spit out the oil after pulling and rinse mouth thoroughly.
