Method – 1: (Shea Butter with Olive Oil and Lavender Oil)
This is simple and easily to prepare homemade shea butter lotion that will turn out less liquid due to the ingredients (like olive oil and lavender oil) used in it. Extra virgin olive oil is an emollient due to its rich content of healthy fatty acids and vitamin E that help to moisturize, nourish and protect the skin from dust and impurities.
Lavender essential oil has skin soothing and calming properties that calm down the inflammatory skin disorders and makes you feel fresh for a longer time.
Steps to be followed…
- Pour 5 oz of raw shea butter in a double boiler to melt it.
- You can make a makeshift double boiler by simply resting a small bowl having sea butter in a pan of water that heated at low flame.
- When once it melted, pour 2 tablespoons of olive oil and 5 drops of lavender oil to it.
- Stir well and take out this oil mix into a bowl and place it in a freezer for about 10 minutes.
- After that, take out the bowl and you will find it partly solidified then use a hand mixer to whip up the ingredients for 5 minutes until it turns to a creamy texture.
- That’s it! Your homemade shea butter lotion is ready to use.
- Just apply a tiny amount on your skin to moisturize the body.

- Also, you can use any of your favorite essential oils in this lotion.
- Or prepare another lotion by simply melting 4 ounces of raw shea butter and stir 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil and refrigerate it for 30 – 40 minutes to cool and then beat the mix to form as a creamy texture by using a hand mixer. Transfer it into a glass jar and use it as desired.
Method – 2: (Shea Butter with Rose)
The amazing combination of shea butter with rose (rose water and rose oil) will make you feel fresh rose flower scent lingering on the skin and get refreshed all the day.
Rose water provides a soothing sensation on the skin and also keeps it fresh by controlling the sebum content with its natural astringent property. Rose essential oil raises the skin’s natural permeability that in turn increases the skin’s absorption of nutrients and other ingredients.
Rose hip oil has a rich source of vitamin C (boosts collagen) and high levels of fatty acids (heal scars, burns and stretch marks) that help to prevent wrinkles and heal the sun damaged skin. Honey acts as a natural humectant that traps moisture from the air and also binds the ingredients together.

- Pour 5 oz of raw shea butter, 4 tablespoons of rose water and 1 teaspoon each of organic honey and rosehip seed oil in a food processor/blender.

Method – 3: (Shea Butter Lotion with Orange Blossom)
This citrusy homemade lotion is made with shea butter, orange blossom water, grapeseed oil and sweet orange essential oil.
Orange blossom water provides many beauty (skin) benefits like toning, cleansing the skin, regulating sebum, controls acne and much more. Sweet orange essential oil has skin healing properties like preventing premature aging, fights acne and suitable for all skin types.
Grapeseed oil has light consistency and helps to enhance the moisturizing quality of other ingredients. It protects the skin from germs, bacteria, and pollutants. Here is the recipe…
Steps to be followed…
- Melt 5 oz of raw shea butter and 1 teaspoon of grapeseed oil by using a double boiler.
- Transfer the melted liquid into a blender and allow it to cool down completely for few minutes.
- Then turn on the food processor and pour 4 tablespoons of orange blossom water slowly from the open end of the processor.
- When the ingredients form into a thick white lotion, add 5 drops of sweet orange essential oil in the processor.
- Run it for 3 – 5 minutes and transfer the content into a clean container.
- Voila! You can apply this homemade lotion to your body to enjoy nourished skin.
Method – 4: (Non-greasy Shea Butter Lotion)
This lotion is non – greasy with a light consistency and easily absorbable into the skin. It contains 2 skin healing oils and 1 beneficial essential oil that helps to promote skin glowing along with fading the acne scars.
Sweet almond oil moisturizes the skin without any oily residue and it effectively moisturizing the chapped areas and cleanses the oily areas of the skin. Apricot kernel oil has a good source of vitamin E that protect the skin from inflammation and harsh elements. Lavender hydrosol calms the irritated skin and rejuvenates it with its soothing property.
Frankincense essential oil has potent anti-scarring and antibacterial properties that shield the skin from harsh chemicals and germs causing skin problems and it also acts as a preservative for this recipe. Cornstarch has oil absorbing property that makes this recipe as a non – greasy along with binding all the ingredients.
Steps to be followed…
- Melt 4 tablespoons of raw shea butter in a double boiler at low to medium heat.
- Place this melted shea butter in the refrigerator for 10 minutes to get partly solidified (the reason is that melted shea butter cannot be whipped properly).
- Take out the shea butter and add 2 teaspoons of sweet almond oil, 3 tablespoons of apricot kernel oil and 10 – 15 drops of Frankincense essential oil to it.
- Stir well by using a hand blender for a couple of minutes and then add 2 teaspoons of corn starch to it.
- Whip it again for 5 minutes until you get a creamy white mixture and now slowly add 1/4 cup of lavender hydrosol while beating the mix.
- Never ever pour this hydrosol all at once into this whipped mixture why because the oils and water will not mix well. So, slow addition of this water will speed the blending.
- Voila! Your non-greasy shea butter lotion recipe is ready to use.
- Transfer this clean container and use it regularly that lasts over 6 months, if stored in a clean dry place.
Note: Or you can substitute the lavender hydrosol with either of these ingredients like rose hydrosol, calendula hydrosol, neroli hydrosol, chamomile hydrosol or any other floral water.
Method – 5: (Shea Butter Lotion)
This is a basic simple recipe to prepare shea butter lotion (without any chemicals or preservatives). You will get a liquid lotion consistency by simply adding the hydrosol at a right time in a slow and steady motion while it is blended on high speed.
Steps to be followed…
- Pour 4 parts of raw shea butter, 3 parts of hydrosol, 1 part of skin healing ingredients and 4 parts of base oil into a processor.
- Blend it for about 5 minutes till it attains smooth and absorbable consistency.
- Then transfer this shea butter lotion into a clean jar/container.
- Stir in the essential oils and close the lid tight to use it on regular basis.
- Store this lotion in a dry place where there is no contact of any impurities with this lotion.
Note: Other simple recipe is to melt 1 cup each of coconut oil and shea butter and 4 tablespoons of beeswax pellets in a double boiler. Transfer the melted mix into a container and wait to cool down slightly. Now add 1 teaspoon of lavender oil to it and stir well to use it regularly.
Method – 6: (Shea Butter Lotion with Essential Oils)
Here we are using certain essential oils like rosemary, lavender, tea tree oil and carrot seed essential oil along with some nourishing oils like sweet almond oil, grapeseed oil, avocado, jojoba oils.
Steps to be followed…
- Pour 1/2 cup of shea butter in a double boiler to melt it over medium low heat.
- Then add 2 – 3 tablespoons of nourishing oil and turn off the heat.
- Place this mix in freezer till it turns to solid form for about 15 – 20 minutes.
- Remove the bowl and add 10 drops of lavender oil, 3 drops each of tea tree oil and carrot seed oil and 5 drops of rosemary oil in it.
- Stir well using a hand whisk and store it in a clean jar at room temperature.
- Use it regularly on your face and body to protect it from external impurities and to hydrate your skin.
Note: If you feel greasy after applying this lotion then add some arrowroot flour or starch to it.
Method – 7: (Shea Butter with Cocoa Butter and Oils)
The combination of shea butter with cocoa butter and oils will provide a high moisturizing effect to the body. This is an excellent body butter that used for baby skin or sensitive skin people.
Steps to be followed…
- Combine 1/2 cup of all these ingredients – shea butter, coconut oil, cocoa butter (or mango butter) and almond oil in a double boiler.
- Turn on the heat over medium heat and stir constantly till the ingredients are melted properly.
- Remove it from heat and allow it to cool slightly and then add 10 – 20 drops of essential oils to it.
- Refrigerate it for an hour and whip it for 10 minutes using a hand mixer until fluffy.
- Set this fluffy mix in your fridge for 10 – 15 minutes and store this mix in a glass jar to use it regularly on your body to enjoy rejuvenated skin.
Tips and Suggestions:
- Always use organic ingredients while preparing these homemade lotions to prolong the shelf life that last for more than 6 months.
- Some beauty experts say that the ratio for preparing these lotions, you have to add 75% solid and 25% liquid.
- Make sure to test whether any of the oils or other ingredients causing any allergic reaction on your skin or not before using them in the preparation of skin lotions.
